ASPIRE-themed Creative Engineering Design

Outcome/Accomplishment

The NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification (ASPIRE), headquartered at Utah State University, expanded its Creative Engineering Design (CED) ASPIRE-themed curriculum pilot at high school affiliates of ASPIRE partnering schools. Impact/Benefits

CED is a hands-on, project-based introductory engineering modular course exploring real-world engineering concepts through the lens of electric vehicle (EV) technology. The CED 3-year pilot was completed over 2021-2024, engaging 12 partnering teachers at 16 schools in Colorado, Indiana, Texas, and Utah, and over 1,200 students. CED teacher professional development reached over 100 educators at the 2024 NSTA national conference, ASEE regional and national pre-conferences, and Esri Education Summit presentation, contributing to teacher professional development.

Explanation/Background

CED is a flexible, modular curriculum that can be adapted and implemented on various instructional timeframes. CED incorporates the engineering design process, develops engineering skills in basic CAD and electronics, explores transportation-related themes, and culminates in a model EV student team design challenge.
