Annual Retreat of ERC Students and Staff Hosted by Caterpillar, Inc. at Company’s Facility

Achievement date:
2014
Outcome/accomplishment:

Graduate students, undergraduate students, and staff at the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP), an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) headquartered at the University of Minnesota, were graciously hosted by Caterpillar, Inc. for the annual student retreat at the company's Hydraulic and Hydraulic Systems facility in Joliet, Illinois (see figure).

Impact/benefits:

Events like these are beneficial to both industry and attendees. ERC corporate members have the opportunity to learn more about the ERC and to build one-on-one interactions and professional relationships with both staff and students, including perhaps 15-25 highly qualified and motivated graduate students who are conducting research across the ERC's many areas of expertise.  The students, especially graduate students seeking jobs, are provided exposure to real companies, including their goals, accomplishments, and future directions. The events also furnish direct recruitment links, which benefit both the companies and attending students.

Explanation/Background:

Over 20 students from across the CCEFP's institutions attended the 2½-day event. Students participated in two factory tours, an engineering laboratory tour, a trip to the Caterpillar Visitors Center, and informal meetings with Caterpillar HR representatives. The students also gave research and poster presentations and attended a Joliet Slammers’ baseball game. The CCEFP is grateful to Caterpillar, Inc. for hosting its students and staff.
