Industry Workshop Puts Students First

Achievement date:
2014
Outcome/accomplishment:

Graduate students from the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS), headquartered at Rutgers University, recently led a workshop on materials characterization and how they relate to continuous manufacturing environments. This was part of the C-SOPS Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting held in November 2013.

Impact/benefits:

Students are a vital part of workshop preparation and execution, but the workshops have always been led by faculty members. The students were given the opportunity to lead the workshop themselves in front of over 25 industrial partners. The meeting was hosted on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park, to maximize participation from the nearby Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Explanation/Background:

This was the first time C-SOPS student researchers led a workshop. They presented information about frequently used characterization techniques, methods for selecting appropriate characterization techniques, and case studies that apply these concepts.
