Growing Trainee Engagement and Development Through the SLC

Outcome/Accomplishment

At the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (NSF ERC) for Advanced Technologies for the Preservation of Biological Systems (NSF ATP-Bio), co-led by the University of Minnesota and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), student engagement is greatly enhanced by participation in the Center’s Student Leadership Council (SLC) and SLC-sponsored events. In Year 4, over 35 students attended the trainee session held during the annual meeting at Texas A&M University. 

Impact/Benefits

Participation in the SLC provides students with a unique opportunity to build their capacity as organizational leaders. It emphasizes training and experience beyond technical skill development and is an excellent chance for students to lead in project development and execution. It helps students to develop a sense of identity within the Center and provides and supports two-way dialogue between the students and Center leadership. 

Explanation/Background

A change in the format of the hybrid bi-monthly meetings was made to allow for localized in-person events to build the sense of student community. This change also resulted in substantially increased meeting participation.
