ERC Spin-out Bridges Academe with Industry
Outcome/Accomplishment
BioChoric, Inc., a company originating from the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (NSF ERC) for Advanced Technologies for the Preservation of Biological Systems (NSF ATP-Bio), was founded in 2021 by two researchers from the Center’s core partner at the University of California at Berkeley.
Impact/Benefits
With the goal of moving ATP-Bio’s technologies into the real world, BioChoric, Inc. operates at the intersection of academic science and industry to translate novel discoveries in isochoric cryopreservation made at NSF ATP-Bio. In addition to clinical practice, BioChoric Inc works with partners in agriculture as well as organizations seeking to protects biodiversity using cryopreservation.
Explanation/Background
BioChoric pursues basic science in designing and providing academia and industry with custom isochoric chambers for cryopreservation research. They develop advanced tissue and organ preservation technologies to minimize damage during storage and transport and thereby increase access to life-saving transplant procedures. For agriculture, they develop advanced isochoric food processing and storage technologies to extend shelf life, reduce waste, neutralize harmful bacteria, and improve processing throughput.
