Nurturing the Pipeline: Many Perspectives Make Better Science

Outcome/Accomplishment

Varied perspectives drive innovation in science. As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its research community, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture (NSF IoT4Ag) Engineering Research Center (ERC), headquartered at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), had a team on-site at the 2024 Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Career Fair.

Impact/Benefits

NSF IoT4Ag’s team hosted a booth at the event, where they spoke to students, academic professionals, and industry members about the mission, research, and opportunities of the Center. NSF IoT4Ag’s graduate students and postdoctoral fellow also organized and facilitated a coding and robotics workshop for more than 267 high school students as part of the Junior MANRRS Symposium.

Explanation/Background

Participating in the MANRRS event reflects NSF IoT4Ag’s continuing commitment to creating, sustaining, and promoting a diverse community of students, scientists, and staff. The Center understands that varied perspectives drive innovation in science and sees MANRRS as an important pathway to recruit and retain Center participants, from students to advisory board members, thus creating an effective environment for scientific advancement.
