The Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering (@LTtoimikunta on Twitter) supports cutting-edge and ethically sustainable scientific research that seeks breakthroughs, novel multidisciplinary research themes and new approaches.
The Research Council encourages researchers to engage in scientifically ambitious research, seek new initiatives and take risks, especially where this would result in groundbreaking findings. The Research Council also works to promote the development of internationally competitive research environments and researchers, keeping in mind the characteristic strengths of Finnish research as well as the needs of the Finnish research and innovation system.
The Research Council is actively and selectively engaged in the implementation of European and Nordic collaboration with a view to increasing the international opportunities of Finnish researchers and enhancing the quality and impact of Finnish research.The Research Council also regularly monitors and analyses the impact of its funding decisions and its strategic activities as well as the satisfaction of the researchers it has funded. In addition, it regularly studies the impact of its various funding opportunities and analyses feedback received from reviewers.
Research in fields of the natural sciences and engineering forms a basis for radical advances that can contribute to the renewal and regeneration of society as well as business and industry. Top-level expertise in these fields also plays a fundamental role in seeking solutions to major societal challenges, such as global environmental issues, mitigation of climate change, sustainable use of natural resources and future energy systems.
