ERC Designated as Statewide Leader for Planning an Electrified Transportation System

Outcome/Accomplishment

The State of Utah has designated the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification (ASPIRE), headquartered at Utah State University, as the lead research center for strategic planning for electrifying transportation infrastructure.

Impact/Benefits

This is the first time that an NSF ERC has received this responsibility and positions ASPIRE to become a trusted authority on electrifying the transportation grid throughout the United States.

Explanation/Background

The designation was given during 2023’s legislative session. ASPIRE will be responsible for developing annual action plans through at least 2028 that lay out gaps, priorities, and recommendations to achieve an electrified transportation system in Utah. The work will also include building relationships with partners and community outreach. A steering committee made up of companies and state organizations in Utah will oversee development of the action plans and provide support.
