CIETI is a multidisciplinary research and development group of the School of Engineering (ISEP) - Polytechnic of Porto. The activities of CIETI are divided into three lines/groups: + Biomaterials and nanotechnologies + Engineering and process, energy and environment + Remote laboratories and test and debug system The center promotes scientific research and the development of new products, processes and systems which contributes to industrial innovation. CIETI also supports scientific education at ISEP integrating undergraduate students, master's students and co-supervising doctoral theses. + Vision To promote scientific and technical research linked to local industries which goal is to create new products, processes and/or systems contributing to innovation and industrial competitiviness. To ensure the scientific and technological dynamics of masters and doctorates. + Mission To promote scientific research in: - Eco-sustainability and circular economy (environment, energy and waste management); - Optimization of chemical and industrial processes; - Biomaterials and nanotechnology; - Remote laboratories and engineering education.
Research Areas
3 Research Groups:
NEPA
Energy, Processes and Evironment Group promotes:
+ Research in Chemical Engineering, foccused in energy, production processes and technologies, and environment;
+ Solutions for engineering problems in industries.
NBIN
Biomaterials and Nanotechnologies Group aims to:
+ Develop research in nanomaterials, such as leather and textile areas;
+ Develop research in nanomaterials and nanomedicine;
+ Develop nanoparticles or molecules that increase medicines bioavailability;
+ Develop research in Medical Optics;
+ Develop research in Food and Environmental Biotechnologies: biorremediation of heavy metals and development of bioassays for toxicity evaluation;
+ Study phisiology of beer yeasts.
LABORIS
Testing Systems Research Group (LABORIS) aims to:
+ Develop and implement modern solutions to advanced education requirements in the industrial field;
+ Perform advanced research on electronic systems debug and testing;
+ Follow the evolution of programmable digital systems and study its use on concrete engineering problems;
+ Promote remote laboratories and experimental support infrastructures both in the context of higher education and industrial applications.
Facilities & Resources
The Center for Innovation in Engineering and Industrial Technology has its own equipments (table 1) for analysis of several parameters. The partnerships with Chemical Engineering Department (DEQ) Laboratories and the Center for Water Studies (CEA) allows to extend the provision of services to other areas/parameters. In the specific area of oil / fat and biodiesel industry, CIETI carries out tests in accordance with the current national and/or international standards, as shown in table 2. Table 1 - Available equipments at CIETI. Equipments - Surface areas and pore size analyser (QuantaChrome Nova Series 4200e) - Combustion gases analyser (HORIBA PG-250 c/ DATA LOGGER) - Gas Chromatograph - FID and TCD, with autosamplers (DANI GC-1000) - Gas Chromatograph - TCD (DANI GC-1000) - Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (OXFORD INSTRUMENTS X-SUPREME 8000) - UV-VIS spectrophotometer (SHIMADZU) Table 2 - Parameters analysed to fats/oils and biodiesel and associated standards. Parameters Standard Acid value EN 14104 Iodine value EN 14111 Saponification value NP 940 Specific density EN ISO 12185 Total FAME and Linolenic acid methyl esthers EN 14103 Suphur content X-ray fluorescence spectrometer Viscosity NP ISO 3104
