Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing

[an NSF Graduated Center] [now merged with CPF Center on Precision Forming cpf.osu.edu/ ] The ERC/NSM is one of the leading university associated groups in North America conducting R&D and providing education in metal forming (stamping, sheet & tube hydroforming, forging) since 1986. In addition to training students, we conduct R&D projects for government agencies, e.g. National Science Foundation and for a Consortium of companies worldwide as well as individual companies, on a confidential basis.

Research Areas

Sheet Metal Forming and Stamping
Currently the following R&D projects are being conducted in Sheet Metal Forming group:
- Properties of Sheet Materials (tensile, bulge, dome tests for biaxial deformation)
- Evaluation of Lubricants under near-production conditions, using the Cup Draw and Strip Draw Test
- FE simulation of Sheet Forming Operation and Prediction of Springback
- Blanking/Shearing of Various Materials (AHSS, copper alloys)
- Application of Servo-Drive Presses to (a) form AHSS and Al Alloys and (b) blanking to improve sheared edge quality
Proprietary Stamping R&D is also conducted for a group of companies at the Center for Precision Forming (CPF)
Forging Technology
Research topics include die design for cold and warm forging, prediction and elimination of forging defects, and prediction and reduction of die wear.
- Research and Development in Forging at ERC/NSM
- Hot Forging: Trends And Applications
- Simulation and Optimization of Metal Forming Processes
- Application of Technology to compete successfully in Forging
Tube Hydroforming Technology
The ERC/NSM is the leading university associated group in North America conducting R&D and providing education in tube and sheet hydroforming.
Some of our information is available to the public. Results of confidential research is only available to companies that support our students and research projects.
- Tube Hydroforming - Capabilities
- Advances in Hydroforming for Manufacturing Automotive Parts
- Warm Tube Hydroforming of Mg and Al Alloy Tubing
- Determination of Flow Stress of Tubular Materials with the - Hydraulic Bulge Test
