Laboratory for Autonomous Systems

LSA is a R&D unit from ISEP the Engineering School of Porto Polytechnic. It conducts research in autonomous systems and related areas such as navigation, control and coordination of multiple robots. LSA is part of the Centre for Robotics and Autonomous Systems of the INESC TEC Associated Laboratory, which designs and implements innovative solutions within the areas of land, water and industrial robotics and intelligent systems. The laboratory activity is developed in four lines of work: R&D programs Educational project Dissemination projects Strategic positioning projects for the school ISEP/IPP MISSION Articulate scientific and technological excellence to developemnt requirements in the emerging areas of security and monitoring, water management, oceans and environment (climate changes). To support and promote research and development leading to society new problems solving in a european, national or regional dimension. We developed multiple land, air and sea autonomous robots ranging from the ROAZ autonomous surface vehicles, to the FALCOS unmanned aircraft systems and multiple land robots such as the soccer playing ISePorto robots or the LINCE autonomous rovers. Laboratory activity also includes teaching support for school courses and consulting.

Research Areas

LSA Autonomous Systems Lab main research area is field robotics applied to oceanographic and environmental monitoring, security and transportation. The research ranges from distributed control, navigation and coordination to embedded real-time systems design, encompassing advanced sensing and perception.
Research activity is pursued in the context of R&D programmes and projects in the cited areas. These lines of development are strutured on autonomous robotic systems application lines and specific scientific and technological challenges.

Facilities & Resources

Robots LSA developed a set of different robots ranging from air vehicles, to ground ones (indoor and outdoor) and marine robots. The laboratory robots span from small wheeled land mobile robots (such as the microrobotics kits) with low computational power and functionalities to advanced land mobile robots such as the Robocup Middle Size League player of ISePorto Team and Unmaned Aerial Vehicles as the FALCOS prototypes. Additionaly the laboratory develops work and research in colaboration with other instituitions robots. Among these the LSTS-FEUP underwater vehicles are an important mean of collaboration either by the support of operations from LSA and the integration of specialised sub-systems.
