The Institute of Computer Science and Engineering (ICIC) was created in order to encourage the development of research in the field of Computer Science and Engineering. The Institute of Computer Science and Engineering constitute one of the most recent scientific areas within the disciplinary spectrum, and were initially developed within the Mathematics Department of the Universidad Nacional del Sur, within which the degree course in Cs. Of Computing. In virtue of a sustained growth of the discipline, from 1994 the Cs Department was created. and Ing. De la Computación (DCIC-UNS), and almost parallel to it arise the postgraduate careers of Magister in Cs. of Computation and Doctorate in Cs. of Computing, in order to enhance the training of highly trained human resources in this area of knowledge.
Research Areas
Artificial intelligence
Representation of knowledge and reasoning
Multi-agent systems
Cognitive Robotics
Information recovery and web mining
Big data
Review of beliefs
Intelligent Systems
Datamining
These areas include, among others, the development of new algorithms for information search in context, and advances in the integration of intelligent systems in digital government infrastructures (e-Goverment).
Visualization and Graphic Computing
The efficient representation of data is a topic of great importance in computing.
In particular, images and volumetric objects are essential elements in Graphic Computing and Visualization and are represented by spatial structures and both their storage and transmission pose challenges in relation to their representations.
The representations based on Wavelets and more recently those based on bandelets, curvelets and countourlets are bases that allow a multi-scale representation of objects and, in many cases, can be considered the best approximation of it.
Software Engineering and Information Systems
Activities in Software Engineering and Information Systems are carried out within the ICIC. The current lines of research involve Semantic Web, Ontologies, Information Integration, Conceptual Modeling, its applications in the Elicitation of Requirements, Collaborative Environments, Electronic Government and Web application engineering, and the topics related to Free Software.
Distributed systems
Different topics related to the area have been developed and researched. This involves issues such as: synchronization in distributed systems, computational and algorithmic models in distributed systems, middlewares, embedded systems and distributed operating systems. The current projects in this area of knowledge have been correlated with projects on electronic government in the area of Software Engineering and Information Systems.
Scientific Computing and Bioinformatics
In the area of Scientific Computing the objective is the development of new computational methodologies for the resolution of complex problems in a wide spectrum of disciplines such as bioinformatics, chemoinformatics, logistics engineering and process engineering among others. These developments are based on the design of new algorithms based on techniques of data mining, machine learning and evolutionary computing.
