NYC High Schoolers Learn Social Science Methods in Gathering Smart City Data

High school students in New York City learned about fusing social science methods with the gathering and analysis of data for smart city projects in a program sponsored by the Center for Smart Streetscapes (CS3), an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) based at Columbia University.

The interdisciplinary education program helps prepare a next-generation workforce with expertise that cuts across engineering, data science, social science, and policy. The interdisciplinary education program enables students to investigate smart city implementation in ways that elicit trust, safeguard privacy, and serve the needs of the local community.

Explanation/Background

The seven-week summer outreach program is designed for students who wish to hone their interests in engineering and the social sciences, regardless of their level of experience or knowledge. The program recruited a diverse group of high-school students from its New York City testbed community to learn and conduct research alongside investigators at CS3.
