ERC Engages Physically Challenged Students Through Science and Engineering Outreach

Achievement date:
2020
Outcome/accomplishment:

The University of Texas at Austin’s Nanomanufacturing Systems Center (NASCENT), an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC), has been engaging 28 deaf and hearing-impaired and 24 blind and visually impaired high school students through outreach programs.

Impact/benefits:

Graduate students work monthly with hearing-impaired students at the Center’s Texas School for the Deaf Science Club. For the blind and visually impaired students, NASCENT hosted the 4th annual STEM Fest at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) in Austin, Texas.

Explanation/Background:

University of Texas at Austin graduate students engaged members of the School for the Deaf Science Club in active learning with hands-on activities and experiments that allow them to explore all aspects of science. This has included areas such as nanoscience, sustainable energy, and the electric grid with the help of an American Sign Language interpreter.
