ERC Develops Undergraduate Core Curriculum for Florida International University

Outcome/accomplishment: 

The NSF-funded Nanosystems Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Cellular Metamaterials (CELL-MET), led by Boston University, developed an undergraduate core curriculum in nanomechanics and cellular metamaterials for Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida.

Impact/benefits: 

One of the Center’s educational objectives is to provide students at every level of education a path to become leaders in research. The new curriculum at FIU is the first undergraduate-level concentration in nanomechanics and cellular metamaterials developed by CELL-MET.

Explanation/Background: 

FIU’s advanced core curriculum, housed in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, is based on themes from the Center’s technical research. The cross‐institutional course “Integrated Leadership in Tissue Engineering” will be part of all concentrations.

Developing curricular components for each of the lead Center institutions provides students with the background knowledge and skills to engage in work that will transform cardiovascular care.
